Typical Application
Waterproofing
- Building Roof terraces- flat or sloppy,
Corrugated AC sheet roofing, sunken portions
of toilet
- Cement Concrete, steel water storage tanks
from outside.
As protective coating
- Building foundation, pipelines, bituminous
coating or tar felt.
Features / Advantages
- Tar-Othane is cold applied, no heating
is required
- Chemically curing type, no external
curing required
- Tar-Othane can be used an existing
bitumen / tar felt for repairing.
- Tar-Othane bonds strongly to cement
concrete, asbestos and steel surfaces.
- Tar-Othane remains unaffected by UV
light and weathering exposure.
- Tar-Othane is resistant to water, dilute
acid, dilute alkali and salt solutions
- Tar-Othane cures to a tough, and abrasion
resistant coating
- Tar-Othane is resistant to fungus and
micro organism growth.
- Tar-Othane gives excellent adhesion
on old bituminous surfaces.
Direction for use
Surface Preparation
Surface preparation is of great importance
and will affect the degree of adhesion and
life of the coating. The surface should
be sound, dry, free of oils, greases and
dust. Remove the laitance and loose particles
by wire brushing. previously applied bituminous
compound / coating should be removed to
the extent possible. The new concrete /
plaster should be cured with water for minimum
28 days. Open the surface crack of more
than 1 mm wide into a joint / groove of
size 5 mm x 5 mm or 10mm x 10mm.
Clean the dust by washing it with water.
Allow the surface to dry. If the structure
is too old and saturated with dirt, treatment
with15-20% dilute hydrochloric acid is recommended
with thorough wire brushing. Wash the surface
with water till neutralization. Allow the
surface to dry completely.
Direction for use
A. Waterproof of RCC / IPS / Surki
Roof terraces - flat or sloppy and parapet
walls
1. Seal the cracks and joints with Polysulphide
Sealant with Techseal RDL-940/941 and Primer
RDL 942. Allow it to cure for min
24hours.
2. Apply one coat of Techoxy, Water Dilutable
Epoxy coating as primer coat. Being water
based, it penetrates deeply into the concrete
surface, seals the porosity, network of
microcracks and strengthens the surface.
3. Apply two coats of Tar-Othane by brush
at an interval of 10-12 hours (before mixing
part II with part I). Stir well in their
individual containers.
4. One coat of aluminum paint or Techcoat
61-P can be applied in order to reflect
the sun heat.
B. Waterproofing of Asbestos Sheet roofing
1. Seal the cracks, joints of two sheets
and ‘J’ bolts with Polysulphide
Sealant, Techseal RDL -940 and Primer RDL
942/947. Allow it to cure for min. 24 hours.
2. Apply one coat of Techoxy, Water Dilutable
Epoxy coating as primer coat.
3. Apply one coat of Tar-Othane or two coats
of Tar-Othane directly (instead of Techoxy)
4. One coat of aluminum paint can be applied
in order to reflect the sun heat.
C. Waterproofing of Toilet Sunken
Portions
1. Seal the joints of pipes, walls to floors
with Polysulphide Sealant, TECHSEAL RDL-
940 and Primer RDL-942. Allow it to cure
for min. 24 hours.
2. Apply one coat of Techoxy, Water Dilutable
Epoxy coating as primer coat.
3. Apply one coat of Tar-Othane. Sprinkle
clean and dry silica sand on wet coat of
Tar-OThane. Press the sand with trowel /
hand. Allow it to cure for min. 72 hours
before doing brick-bat-coba. Use Integral
Waterproofer in Cement Mortar of Brick-Bat-Coba.
4. Fix the tiles with a “Fix-A-Tile”
adhesive and “Spectrum Tile Mate”
for tile joints.
D. Protection of Pipelines and Metal
Storage Tanks from External
1. On steel pipes first apply one coat of
Zinc Chromate / Zinc Rich / Red oxide Epoxy
resin based anti-corrosive primer.
2. Apply two coats of Tar-Othane at an interval
of 10-12 hours.
E. Repairing of Old bituminous
coatings / felts
1. The basic bituminous coating / felts
should be strong enough. Wire brush the
surface to remove loose particles and to
make the surface rough.
2. On porous surfaces apply two coats Tar-oThane
at an interval of 10-12 hours.
3. For repairing cracks of Tar Felt, wire
brush the crack and adjoining area. Clean
the dirt and dust. Apply one coat of Tar-Othane
when in wet condition place glass fibre
tissue. Sheet lengthwise on the crack and
press it. Then apply additional one coat
of Tar-Othane on tissue sheet.
Over Paintability - Tar-Othane
can be overcoated by Techcoat 61-P,
white P.U. waterproof coating and Aluminium
Paint.
Thinner : Tar-Othane is
normally supplied at application viscosity.
However 5 to 7% of thinner solvent, Toluene
can be used to overcome the problem of quicker
drying due to hot substrate and sun heat.
Cleaning : Tools and equipment
can be cleaned immediately with solvents
like xylene, acetone etc.
Storage And Shelf Life
12 months shelf life if stored between -10°
to 35°C in unopened container. After
opening it should be used immediately.
Packing 5 Litre., 20 Litre
Precautions:
1. Some people are sensitive to tar, resins,
hardeners, solvents, and its vapours, so
it is advisable to use hand gloves and goggles.
2. While application, proper ventilation
should be provided.
3. Avoid application below 10°C temperature
of surface. At low temperatures, drying
and curing periods will be prolonged.
4. Avoid application on damp or moist conditions
as it will create blister for motion problem.
5. Tar-Othane should not be used for coating
interior surface of potable water tanks,
as it gives a smell of tar.
